Lifestream walk Westkreuz Berlin on the occasion of World Listening Day

<Dutch text below> Every year at Soundtrackcity we organise a soundwalk on 18 july on occasion of World Listening Day. Till now these walks were in The Netherlands every year. This year we will change that and do a walk around Westkreuz and stream the walk with one of the mobile mics of Radio Earth. We will start the Lifestream walk Westkreuz early in the morning, around 7:00 AM. and when we are finished walking we place the Mobile Mic somewhere in the area to continue streaming until the next morning. If you want to join the walk, reservation is mandatory. When you mail Michiel, you’ll get the start location. Westkreuz as an infrastructural node has a weird genesis (keywords: AVUS, NS zeit, Reichsbahn, DDR) The highway interchange is one of the oldest and at the same time most trafficked in Germany. The land is literaly shredded by the infrastructure into pieces which are barely accessible on foot. We have visited the area regularly in recent years.

This time we will visit as much interspaces as possible and listen to how these spaces and its human or non-human dwellers cope and interact with the sound of passing motorised tin, steel and rubber.

AVUS, Rocket Fritz and Autowahn

In 1907, at a time when the automobile was still considered a novelty next to the airplane, the balloon and the radio, Kaiser Wilhelm personally ordered the construction of the AVUS (Automobil-Verkehrs- und Übungsstraße = Automobile Traffic and Practice Road), a dead straight 10-km stretch through the Grunewald Forest where experiments could be carried out with the new thing that was the automobile at the time. This is where engineer Fritz von Opel (rocket Fritz) ticked off 238 km/h in 1928 with his RAK2, an automobile equipped with 24 rockets.

10 years later, under the watchful eye of Uncle Adolf, the grandstand to the left of the photo below was built to publicly propagate the fascist ideals of speed, power and violence*). Not long after, in 1940, this stretch was incorporated into the German Reichsautobahnnetz. The rest is history. If you can find the ‘Stunde Null’ of the ‘Autowahn’ anywhere, it is right here! **)

In front of you in the photo is the ICC, a futuristic brutalist mega convention center (https://iccc.berlin/en/ ) from the 1970s that seems to take off at any moment to function through on another planet. It has stood empty since 2014 – asbestos. Left above the grandstand you see the Funkturm.

Apropos Funkturm: built as a Radio Station in 1926, now only a landmark, but in 1935 the world’s first television program was broadcast here. The NS mob was stuck in the saddle by then. One wonders what that program was like…

Lifestream walk Westkreuz Berlijn ter gelegenheid van World Listening Day

Elk jaar organiseert Soundtrackcity een geluidswandeling op 18 juli ter gelegenheid van World Listening Day. Tot nu toe waren deze wandelingen elk jaar in Nederland. Dit jaar doen we het anders en wandelen we rond Westkreuz in Berlijn. Ook al ben je niet in Berlijn, je kunt live meeluisteren, want we streamen de wandeling met een van de mobiele microfoons van Radio Earth. We beginnen vroeg in de ochtend, rond 7:00 uur, en als we uitgewandeld zijn plaatsen we de Mobile Mic ergens in het gebied om nog te blijven streamen tot de volgende ochtend. Als je mee wilt lopen, is reserveren verplicht. Als je Michiel mailt, krijg je de startlocatie. Westkreuz als infrastructureel knooppunt heeft een eigenaardige ontstaansgeschiedenis (trefwoorden: AVUS, NS zeit, Reichsbahn, DDR) Het snelwegknooppunt is een van de oudste en tegelijkertijd meest bereden stukken snelweg van Duitsland. Het omliggende gebied is door de infrastructuur letterlijk in stukken gehakt en daardoor nauwelijks te voet bereikbaar. We hebben het gebied regelmatig bezocht de afgelopen jaren.

Het belooft ditmaal een spannende tocht te worden. We zullen zoveel mogelijk tussenruimtes bezoeken en luisteren naar hoe deze ruimtes en hun menselijke en niet-menselijke bewoners omgaan met het geluid van voorbijrazend gemotoriseerd blik, staal en rubber.

Hier tikte ingenieur Fritz von Opel (rocket Fritz) in 1928 de 238 km p/u aan met zijn RAK2, een automobiel voorzien van 24 raketten.

10 jaar later werd onder toeziend oog van ome Adolf de tribune links in onderstaand beeld gebouwd om de fascistische idealen van snelheid, kracht en geweld publiekelijk uit te dragen*). Niet lang daarna, in 1940, werd dit traject opgenomen in het Duitse Reichsautobahnnetz. De rest is geschiedenis. Als je ergens de ‘Stunde Null’ van de ‘Autowahn’ kunt vinden, dan wel hier! **)
