Urban Sound Lab
<English below> Urban Sound Lab is een participatief sociaal onderzoeksproject dat tot doel heeft het publieke bewustzijn van stedelijk geluid te stimuleren en ruimte te bieden voor uitwisseling en onderzoek naar de persoonlijke luisterervaringen van burgers.
Hoe klinkt jouw stad? Wat hoor je in je huis, je straat, je buurt?
Binnen Urban Sound Lab werken experts uit verschillende vakgebieden, zoals geluidskunstenaars, theatermakers, sociologen, architecten, muzikanten, schrijvers en componisten, samen met mensen uit verschillende gemeenschappen bij het verkennen van de omgevingsgeluiden van verschillende buurten in Amsterdam Zuid. Het doel van Urban Sound Lab is om mensen te stimuleren naar hun omgeving te luisteren en hen bewust te maken van de vele verschillende relaties die ze met hun omgeving hebben via geluid.
De deelnemers ontmoeten elkaar in luister- en schrijfworkshops, geluidswandelingen, luistertafels en presenteren hun bevindingen aan een breder publiek op plaatsen zoals het theater, een radioprogramma of op straat. Deelnemers groeien uit tot autonome onderzoekers en worden zich meer bewust van de sociale en politieke aspecten van geluiden in hun stedelijke omgeving.
Context
De gevarieerde bevolkingssamenstelling van Amsterdam Zuid gecombineerd met stedelijke veranderingsprocessen die de laatste tijd versneld op dit gebied inwerken vormen voor Soundtrackcity een boeiende en urgente context voor dit participatief sociaal onderzoeksproject. Soundtrackcity heeft eerder in dit deel van de stad enkele spraakmakende geluidsprojecten gerealiseerd en een groot netwerk opgebouwd. Urban Sound Lab profiteert hiervan en bouwt hierop voort.
Urban Sound Lab is een van de drie lopende onderzoeksprojecten van Soundtrackcity. De andere zijn Sonic West en Crowdsourcing Mr. Visserplein.
Urban Sound Lab
Urban Sound Lab is a participatory social research project that aims to stimulate the public awareness of urban sound and provide a space for exchange and research into the personal listening experiences of citizens.
How does your city sound? What do you hear in your house, your street, your neighbourhood?
Within Urban Sound Lab experts from various fields, like sound artists, theatre-makers, sociologists, architects, musicians, writers and composers work together with people of diverse communities in exploring the environmental sounds of different neighbourhoods in the Southern quarter of Amsterdam. The aim of Urban Sound Lab is to encourage people to listen to their environment and make them aware of the many different relationships they have with their environment through sound. The participants meet in listening- and writing-workshops, sound walks, listening tables and present their findings to a wider audience in places like a theatre, a radio show or in the streets. Participants turn into self-determined researchers and become more aware of the social and political aspects of sounds in their urban environment.
The point of departure is always a simple question like; What do you hear? Which sounds do you want to share? What should the neighbourhood sound like in the future? During a multi-year process, the participants become sound-experts of their surroundings. They will feel more and more connected to their neighbourhood and their neighbours.
